I notice they're quite heavy too. Xiaomi Pistons 2 shells weigh around 5g for the pair, the Ostry KC06A around 7g. The AG-R8 are around 16g for the pair, whilst the RHA T10 are even heavier at 18g. The MacaW GT100s weighs around the same at around 17g for the pair too.

 

Although that doesn't really give an indication of build quality, I did not expect that in the price!

 

I finally managed to find the point of getting a good seal. However they are now no longer comfortable. It's hard to get a good seal again when I take them out and put them back in though. Definitely need to do some tip rolling which may help. But now I can give some better impressions of the sound whilst these are still in.

 

The bass levels are actually fine. It produces a lot of sub bass actually and that's something that you feel more than you hear so I guess not having a good seal was why it was almost non existent before. The bass doesn't sound as detailed and sounds a tad muddy. Mids are still lovely and smooth with vocals and guitars.

 

Now onto some quickish A/B testing:

 

Compared to the KC06A:
The AG-R8 is not as easy to drive as the KC06A but still easy to drive. More sub and mid bass compared to the KC06A but the bass isn't as detailed. Mids are very comparable but the KC06A just sounds a little more airy. Noticeable in female vocals. The KC06A unfortunately completely slays the AG-R8 when it comes to highs. You can hear a lot more micro details in the KC06A compared to the AG-R8, giving the former more sparkle and making it seem brighter. However, when listening to the KC06A after hearing the AG-R8, the KC06A does seem a little hot and sizzly. Considering though that the KC06A is double the price and perhaps my favourite IEM under $100, the AG-R8 performs decently.

 

Compared to the Vsonic VSD3:
Again the AG-R8 isn't as easy to drive as the VSD3. Bass is rather similar on both the VSD3 and RG-08. There is perhaps a touch more sub bass on the VSD3. Both have lovely smooth mids but I would say the RG-08 sound slightly more full. The RG-08 lacks a bit of sizzle on the high end compared to the VSD3 so while vocals sound fuller, they lack a bit of micro details again. I would say the gap between the VSD3 and the AG-R8 is much smaller than the gap between the KC06A and the AG-R8.   


Compared to the ED10: 
The ED10 is slightly easier to drive compared to the AG-R8. Similar story as the KC06A, the AG-R8 has more sub and mid bass compared to the ED10 but the ED10 has clearer and crisper bass. The mids sound smoother and fuller on the AG-R8 though. Again the ED10 makes it look like the treble in the AG-R8 has taken a back seat. Things like cymbals aren't as prominent as the vocals and bass. Separation is better on the AG-R8. Overall the AG-R8 seems to edge out in clarity though.


Compared to the Pistons 2: 
The Pistons 2 and the AG-R8 are roughly on par in terms of power requirements. On the low end, the Pistons 2 have roughly the same sub bass as the AG-R8 but much more boomy mid-bass. Fortunately the bass is generally more crisp than the AG-R8 so although it is more boomy, it doesn't sound as muddy as the AG-R8. Again the mids sound smoother and more detailed on the AG-R8 but they're both rather full. After hearing the Pistons 2, the AG-R8 sounds more balanced although I do notice the slightly muddier bass. The boomy mid-bass is really noticeable on the Pistons 2 though which makes some songs sound unnatural. 

 
Overall the Auglamour R8 is limited in terms of sound quality. It has decent bass for those that love EDM genres and the mids are lovely for vocals and rock music. It's lacking in highs though which is the real thing that holds me back from loving it. It was designed to look like a giant but unfortunately it isn't a giant killer. I would personally say it's better than its cheaper Chinese brothers, the ED10 and Pistons 2, but not everyone will agree. What is undeniable however is that the overall package is a great deal. You get a solid accessories package including a mini pelican type hard case, enough tips to get you started, along with a cable clip and ear guides. The plaited cable is amazing as it is very light and does not retain any memory nor does it end up rubbing on clothing. It is however a bit thin above the y-connector and slightly microphonic. It's lovely to see an L-plug here as I personally find these better than straight I-plugs for durability and ease of use. Now the shells are amazing in terms of build quality- they've managed to craft them from solid metal and to also provide a removable cable using what I believe to be the standard UE 2-pin connection. It's a shame that the nozzle has a slightly awkward fit though but all in all it is fantastic package for the price.
